To this end, he adopted a number of pseudonyms in his early essay writing, pseudonyms that can be said to foreshadow the personae he used in his fiction. He attempted, instead, to make his readers see through the social and literary hypocrisy that, as he believed, characterized the age. Both in his miscellaneous writings and in his first great novel, Vanity Fair, Thackeray sought to counter the kind of melodramatic and pretentious entertainment provided by such authors as Edward Bulwer-Lytton, William Harrison Ainsworth, and even the early Charles Dickens. Long remembered as a social satirist par excellence, William Makepeace Thackeray (18 July 1811 – 24 December 1863) wrote more in the manner of Henry Fielding than of Samuel Richardson and more in the realistic vein than in the style of the “novel of sensibility,” that production of the early nineteenth century that sought to achieve heightened emotional effects at the expense of believable plot and characterization. Striking Distance.Pamela Clare This story is incredible! I've been concerned that my review would not do it justice. This storyline is a little bit like "Hard to Hold" by Stephanie Tyler. *It's getting rave reviews on GR so it could be I have a shitty opinion. I was so excited to read this story but it just wasn't for me. Whew, that was exhausting to type, imagine how it was to read. Laura's kidnapping trauma, Javier's combat PTSD, Laura wanting to get her child, Nassar's (Laura's kidnapper) call to brother-in-arms to kill her, Tower's (owner of company who was assigned to protect Laura and went bankrupt when failed to do so) wanting revenge, soldier wanting revenge for a story Laura did years ago, and finally was Ali a terrorist, are terrorist trying to kill Laura? I'm even probably missing something. There was just way too many story threads going on here. I didn't feel the chemistry between Javier and Laura. At the same time though, this slowness didn't feel sensual or anticipatory. Javier and Laura's relationship was very slow burning, and it should have been because of the emotional and physical trauma Laura suffered due to her kidnapping. I lost my ability to feel suspense.in a suspense story :/ The many, many attempts on the main chica's (Laura) life became numbing.
